10-Foot Grave, 60 Days of Silence: How Faridabad Police Solved a Chilling Family Crime

In a horrifying case of dowry-related violence, 25-year-old Tannu Kumar—also known as Tanu Singh or Tannu Rajput—was allegedly murdered by her in-laws and buried in a 10-foot-deep pit outside their home in Roshan Nagar, Faridabad. Originally from Shikohabad in Uttar Pradesh’s Firozabad district, Tannu had married Arun Singh two years ago. However, her married life was marred by persistent dowry harassment from her husband’s family.

The abuse was so severe that Tannu spent most of her first year of marriage at her parental home, only returning after local panchayat intervention. But on the night of April 21–22, 2025, her life took a tragic turn. According to police, she was strangled to death by her father-in-law, Bhoop Singh, when no other family members were around.

The next morning, Bhoop Singh and Arun Singh hired an earthmover, claiming it was to build a soak pit for drainage. Instead, they buried Tannu’s body in the freshly dug pit and sealed it with a concrete slab. Two days later, the family filed a missing person report, falsely claiming that Tannu was mentally unstable and had run away from home—misleading both authorities and neighbors.

Despite Tannu’s father, Hakim, expressing strong suspicion about the newly covered pit, local police initially dismissed his concerns. It was only after weeks of pressure from her family that police finally exhumed the body on June 20, 2025. The decomposed remains were identified by her clothing, and a post-mortem was conducted at Badshah Khan Civil Hospital.

Four members of the family—Bhoop Singh, his wife Sonia, their son Arun Singh, and daughter Kajal—have been booked at Palla Police Station. Bhoop Singh has confessed to the crime. He and Arun are currently in custody, while the others remain absconding.

The case has triggered widespread outrage, casting a grim spotlight on the continuing menace of dowry-related violence in India and the urgent need for stronger protections for women.
