
At least 800 people have died and more than 2,500 have been injured following a devastating earthquake that struck eastern Afghanistan, according to a spokesperson from the Taliban-led government.
The United Nations in Afghanistan expressed its deep sorrow over the incident. In a statement posted on X, the UN noted that its teams are already on-site, providing emergency aid and life-saving assistance. “Our thoughts are with the affected communities,” the message read.
India quickly extended its condolences and support. Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted on X: “Deeply saddened by the loss of lives due to the earthquake in Afghanistan. Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved families… India stands ready to provide all possible humanitarian aid.”
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar echoed the sentiment, saying India will offer assistance and solidarity during this crisis. “Our prayers are with the injured and affected families,” he stated.
According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake struck at 11:47 p.m. local time, with its epicenter 27 km northeast of Jalalabad in Nangarhar province, at a shallow depth of 8 km. The worst damage has been reported from Kunar province, particularly in the Nur Gul, Watpur, Soki, Manogi, and Chapadare districts, where homes were either severely damaged or completely destroyed.
