Kap’s Cafe, the Surrey-based restaurant owned by Indian comedy star Kapil Sharma, has publicly condemned the shooting incident that occurred outside its premises early Thursday morning. The attack, which took place around 1:50 am local time, saw at least ten bullets fired at the cafe’s windows, shattering one of the panes. Several staff members were inside the restaurant at the time, but fortunately, no injuries were reported. The incident has sent shockwaves through the local community and among Kapil Sharma’s fans worldwide.

In response to the attack, Kap’s Cafe issued a heartfelt statement on Instagram, expressing both shock and resilience. “We opened Kap’s Cafe with hopes of bringing warmth, community, and joy through delicious coffee and friendly conversation. To have violence intersect with that dream is heartbreaking. We are processing this shock but we are not giving up,” the statement read. The cafe thanked its supporters for their kind words, prayers, and encouragement, emphasizing that the establishment exists because of the community’s belief in its mission. “Let’s stand firm against violence and ensure Kap’s Cafe remains a place of warmth and community. From all of us at Kap’s Cafe, thank you and see you soon, under better skies. With hope and gratitude #supportkapscafecanada,” the message concluded. The cafe also expressed gratitude to the Surrey Police and Delta Police for their prompt response and efforts to ensure everyone’s safety during the ordeal.

Fears grow for Indian businesses in Canada

According to the Surrey Police Service, the investigation is still in its early stages. Officers are interviewing witnesses and reviewing CCTV footage to piece together the sequence of events. While there is no official suspect description or confirmed motive at this time, reports in Indian media suggest that a Khalistani separatist group, Babbar Khalsa International, has claimed responsibility for the shooting. Canadian journalist Daniel Bordman noted on social media that Harjit Singh Laddi, associated with the Babbar Khalsa International—a group infamously linked to the Air India 182 bombing—had taken responsibility for the attack. Police spokesperson Staff Sgt Lindsey Houghton stated that all possible connections and motives are being examined, and urged anyone with information to contact police or Crime Stoppers.

The incident has raised concerns about the safety of Indian businesses and communities in Canada, particularly in light of recent tensions involving extremist groups.
