Air India has announced an interim compensation of ₹25 lakh each for the families of those who lost their lives, as well as the sole survivor of the devastating Ahmedabad plane crash. This payment comes in addition to the ₹1 crore compensation already declared by the airline’s parent company, Tata Sons.
The tragic incident involved a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, which crashed in the Meghaninagar area shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad International Airport on Thursday afternoon. A total of 270 people were killed, including 241 passengers, 12 crew members, and at least 17 people on the ground.
Air India stated that the ₹25 lakh payout—approximately £21,000—is intended to provide urgent financial relief while long-term compensation is being processed. Tata Sons’ previously announced ₹1 crore assistance extends to ground victims as well, with the group also covering medical costs for the injured.
A full investigation is underway, with the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) currently analysing black box data to determine the cause of the crash. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and senior government officials have visited the crash site and local hospitals, assuring families of full support. Air India has also set up emergency helplines and deployed support teams to assist affected families.
Beyond the interim and corporate compensation, families are likely to receive insurance payouts of up to ₹1.5 crore, in accordance with global aviation protocols. The tragedy has led India’s aviation regulator to launch immediate safety audits of Air India’s Boeing 787 fleet and initiate a broader review of national aviation safety standards.
