More than 172 years after the British introduced railways to India, Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram, is set to make its debut on the Indian Railways map.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Mizoram on Saturday to inaugurate the newly completed Bairabi–Sairang broad gauge railway line and flag off the first-ever Rajdhani Express connecting Aizawl with New Delhi. The premium train service will commence weekly operations from September 19.
According to the Northeast Frontier Railway, the Rajdhani Express will cover a distance of 2,510 km in 43 hours and 25 minutes, averaging a speed of 57.81 km per hour. The inaugural run on September 13 will follow a special schedule, though the number of stops, coaches, and other service details will remain unchanged from the regular operations.
This landmark project is expected to enhance connectivity in the Northeast, opening up new economic and travel opportunities for Mizoram and strengthening its integration with the national rail network.
