President Droupadi Murmu, who was sworn in as the 15th President of India on July 25, 2022, has a remarkable journey marked by resilience and dedication. Born on June 20, 1958, in Uparbeda village, Odisha, into a Santhali tribal family, she overcame significant hardships in her early life. Determined to pursue education, she moved to Bhubaneswar and graduated with a BA from Ramadevi Women’s College, becoming the first woman from her village to achieve a college degree.

Lifelong Commitment to Public Service

Murmu began her career as a Junior Assistant in the Irrigation and Power Department of the Odisha government from 1979 to 1983. She later served as an honorary teacher at the Sri Aurobindo Integral Education Centre in Rairangpur between 1994 and 1997. Her commitment to public service led her to become the Governor of Jharkhand on May 18, 2015, making her the first woman tribal Governor of a tribal-majority state. During her tenure, she was widely praised for upholding constitutional values and championing the rights of tribal communities.
