‘America does not need more Indians,’: Charlie Kirk’s anti-India visa remarks spark debate after his assassination in Utah

In a shocking development, American right-wing activist Charlie Kirk (31) was shot dead at a Utah event on Wednesday. Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA, had gained notoriety for his aggressive positions on immigration, including a recent attack on Indian workers.

Just days earlier, Kirk posted: “America does not need more visas for people from India… Enough already.” The remarks drew criticism from immigrant advocates and prompted fresh debate over the H-1B visa program. Conservative figures such as Laura Loomer and Laura Ingraham backed his stance, warning against outsourcing and visa concessions to India.

However, studies show Indian professionals are integral to the US economy, especially in technology and healthcare, contributing billions in taxes. Kirk’s assassination has polarized political discourse, with both Left and Right trading blame.

The killing also highlights the fragile state of US-India relations under Trump 2.0, where student visas for Indians have been curtailed, tariffs on Indian goods increased, and diplomatic tensions escalated. Congressman Ro Khanna recently urged Washington not to let Trump’s ego undermine a partnership vital for countering China.
