Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday reaffirmed the Modi government's zero-tolerance policy towards terrorism and criticized previous administrations for being "soft on terror." Speaking in the Rajya Sabha during the debate on the Ministry of Home Affairs' performance, Shah emphasized several key decisions by the Modi government, including the abrogation of Article 370, which he claimed has brought lasting peace to Jammu and Kashmir.

Shah stated that since the removal of Article 370, the involvement of local people in terrorism had come to an end, marking the restoration of peace across the region. He also pointed out that the glorification of terrorists, which had been a recurring issue during the UPA government's tenure, has been eradicated under the NDA's rule. The Home Minister highlighted a significant reduction in terror-related fatalities, noting a 70% decrease in deaths due to terrorism.

Comparing the data from two key periods, Shah revealed that from 2004 to 2014, Jammu and Kashmir witnessed 7,217 terrorist incidents. However, between 2014 and 2024, the number dropped to 2,242, underscoring the effectiveness of the government's approach.

Shah paid tribute to the sacrifices made by police personnel in safeguarding the nation, acknowledging their contributions in strengthening India’s security. "I want to pay tribute to all the police personnel who have sacrificed their lives for the safety and security of the people," he said. "Thanks to their immense sacrifice, India is now poised to play an important role in global affairs."

Discussing the legacy issues India faced before Prime Minister Modi's tenure, Shah highlighted that terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir, Left Wing Extremism, and insurgencies in the Northeast had been major obstacles to the country’s development. "These issues were holding back India's potential for peace and development, but under PM Modi, we have eradicated these obstacles," he asserted.

Focusing on Jammu and Kashmir, Shah described the stark transformation in the region's security environment since the Modi government assumed power. Recalling a time when terrorist attacks on civilians were frequent, particularly during religious festivals, he noted that previous governments had remained silent out of fear of political backlash. In contrast, the Modi government adopted a firm "Zero Tolerance" policy towards terrorism, Shah said.
