Things are not really going well for Pakistan after India’s Operation Sindoor. There is no question that Pakistan was left shaken, and now the long-standing demand for independence by Baloch leaders has gained fresh momentum. Reports now suggest that Baloch leaders have formally declared independence from Pakistan and announced the formation of a new country named the Republic of Balochistan.
Prominent Baloch activist Meer Yar Baloch took to social media to appeal to the Indian government to open a Baloch embassy in New Delhi, while also seeking official recognition from the United Nations. Alongside this declaration, the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) claimed responsibility for 71 attacks carried out at 51 different locations in recent days.
Baloch leaders announce freedom from Pakistan
Meer Yar Baloch declared the formation of an independent "Republic of Balochistan" via social media on 9 May, urging India and the United Nations to officially recognise the new state. He appealed to the Indian government to permit the establishment of a Baloch embassy in Delhi and claimed that Pakistan’s “terror infrastructure” is on the verge of collapse. The announcement was accompanied by images of the Baloch flag and a map of the proposed independent Balochistan.
On 11 May, the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) claimed it had carried out 71 attacks across 51 locations, targeting Pakistani military forces, intelligence agencies, police stations, mineral transport routes, and major highways. The BLA labelled Pakistan as a "state sponsor of terrorism" and warned regional powers not to trust Islamabad. The group declared it would not rest until Pakistan was “dismantled” and rejected any dialogue as a betrayal.
Meer Yar Baloch called on India and the United Nations to grant official recognition to Balochistan as a sovereign nation. He also appealed to the UN for funding for currency, passports, and essential state institutions. Baloch activists are urging India to raise the issue at international forums and take concrete steps in support of the emerging Baloch nation.
On 11 May, the BLA reiterated that it had conducted 71 attacks at 51 locations, targeting critical infrastructure and military entities in Pakistan. The group again emphasised that it would not stop until Pakistan is dismantled and warned against trusting the Pakistani state.
However, the declaration of independence remains symbolic for now and has not yet received formal recognition from any country or international organisation.
