Bengaluru Rains: Elderly Man and Boy Electrocuted in Flooded Basement Amid Heavy Downpour

A 63-year-old man and a 12-year-old boy tragically died after being electrocuted in a flooded apartment basement in Bengaluru on Monday evening, as the city experienced heavy rainfall that triggered severe waterlogging across several areas.

The incident took place around 6:15 PM at Madhuvan Apartments in BTM 2nd Stage. Manmohan Kamath, 63, was reportedly using an external motor to pump out water from the inundated cellar when a short circuit led to his electrocution. Dinesh, a 12-year-old boy who was inside the waterlogged basement at the time, was also fatally electrocuted.

The tragedy occurred on a day when Bengaluru was lashed by intense rain, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) reporting 104 mm of rainfall within 24 hours. Several low-lying areas were submerged, and traffic came to a standstill in many parts of the city.

Visuals circulating online showed vehicles stranded and roads turned into streams as Bengaluru’s drainage infrastructure struggled to cope. In a separate rain-related incident, a 35-year-old woman lost her life after a wall collapse.

Authorities have since issued a yellow alert for Bengaluru and other parts of Karnataka, with forecasts predicting more rain over the next two days. Emergency teams have begun efforts to address the flooding and prevent further accidents. Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwara acknowledged the widespread waterlogging and stated that the newly formed Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA), replacing the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), is taking steps to address the crisis. He attributed the drainage issues to blocked culverts caused by litter such as leaves and plastic waste.

As the city mourns the loss of lives and continues to grapple with seasonal floods, residents and officials alike are calling for more sustainable infrastructure and timely maintenance to prevent such tragedies.
