CBI Files Closure Report in Sushant Singh Rajput Death Case, Rhea Chakraborty Given Clean Chit

More than four years after taking over the probe, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed a closure report in the Sushant Singh Rajput death case, sources confirmed on Saturday.

Sushant Singh Rajput (34) was found hanging in his Mumbai Bandra apartment on June 14, 2020, sparking widespread speculation and multiple conspiracy theories, including allegations of black magic. The case led to a high-profile investigation.

Officials stated that the closure report covers two key cases—one filed by Rajput’s father against Rhea Chakraborty and another filed by Chakraborty against Rajput’s family. After over four years of investigation, the CBI found no evidence of anyone abetting Rajput’s suicide, giving Rhea Chakraborty and her family a clean chit.

A forensic team from AIIMS had also ruled out murder, concluding that it was a case of death by suicide.

The CBI took over the case from the Bihar Police in August 2020 after Rajput’s father, KK Singh, filed an abetment of suicide complaint in Patna. His family accused Rhea Chakraborty of mentally harassing, drugging, exploiting him for money, and playing a role in his death.

During the probe, the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) examined the crime scene, analyzing a laptop, hard disks, a Canon camera, and two mobile phones. Over 20 people, including Chakraborty, were questioned.

Following the submission of the closure report, the Bandra magistrate court has scheduled the next hearing on April 8. If accepted, the case will be formally closed.

Rhea Chakraborty’s lawyer, Satish Maneshinde, expressed gratitude for the CBI’s thorough investigation but criticized the media trial and false narratives surrounding the case.

In October 2023, the Supreme Court upheld the Bombay High Court’s decision to cancel the CBI’s lookout circular against Rhea, her brother Showik, and her parents. The court dismissed the challenge, calling the petition “frivolous.”

With the closure report filed and no evidence of wrongdoing, the case that once gripped the nation may finally reach its legal conclusion.
