CBI Investigates Ladakh Activist Sonam Wangchuk Over Foreign Funding, Pakistan Visit
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has launched a probe into alleged FCRA violations by the Himalayan Institute of Alternatives Ladakh (HIAL), co-founded by activist Sonam Wangchuk, following unrest over demands for Ladakh statehood. Officials confirmed that the investigation, which began two months ago, also examines Wangchuk’s February 6 visit to Pakistan.
The inquiry follows a land allotment controversy in August, when the Ladakh administration revoked HIAL’s land allotment, triggering widespread protests from groups advocating for constitutional safeguards and special status for the region. The cancellation heightened tensions, contributing to unrest among local communities.
Clashes erupted between security forces and protesters on Wednesday, leaving four dead and at least 80 injured, including 40 police personnel, despite a curfew. The Ministry of Home Affairs accused Wangchuk of inciting unrest through “Arab Spring-style” references during his 15-day hunger strike, which he recently ended.
The government said discussions on Ladakh’s demands continue through a High Powered Committee, but claimed that politically motivated actors are undermining talks. The situation has also sparked political debate, with Congress councillor Phuntsog Stanzin Tsepa and other regional leaders weighing in on the ongoing protests and administrative actions.
Police and investigative agencies are monitoring developments closely, while authorities maintain that all legal and procedural measures are being followed to restore stability in the region.
