The ATAGS (Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System), India’s first indigenously designed, developed, and manufactured 155 mm artillery gun, is poised to significantly enhance the operational capabilities of the Indian Armed Forces with its advanced technology and superior firepower. Featuring a long 52-caliber barrel, the ATAGS boasts an impressive firing range of up to 40 km. The system's larger caliber ensures higher lethality, delivering greater explosive payloads while offering automated deployment, efficient target engagement, and reduced crew fatigue.
The approval for its induction signals India's growing expertise in indigenous defence manufacturing and technological advancements. The ATAGS will replace older 105 mm and 130 mm artillery guns, playing a crucial role in modernizing the Indian Army’s artillery and enhancing operational readiness along the western and northern borders, providing a strategic advantage in terms of firepower.
Developed under the ‘Make in India’ initiative, the ATAGS is a result of collaboration between the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Indian private industry. Over 65% of its components, including critical subsystems like the barrel, muzzle brake, breech mechanism, and ammunition handling system, are sourced domestically. This reduces India's reliance on foreign imports and strengthens its defence manufacturing capabilities.
As an entirely indigenous system, the ATAGS will benefit from a robust supply chain for spares and seamless life cycle maintenance, ensuring long-term support and reinforcing India’s self-sufficiency in defence technology.
