‘Communist nutjob!’: Donald Trump slams Zohran Mamdani’s win in NYC shock

Published on

Former U.S. President Donald Trump launched a scathing attack on Zohran Mamdani following Mamdani’s surprise victory in the Democratic mayoral primary for New York City. In a post on Truth Social, Trump labeled Mamdani a “100% Communist Lunatic,” questioned his appearance, and expressed disbelief that someone with Mamdani’s views could be on track to become mayor. The outburst underscores the deep ideological rift between the far-left candidate and the former president.

Zohran Mamdani, a 33-year-old Democratic Socialist and New York State Assembly member, defeated former Governor Andrew Cuomo with 43.5% of the vote to Cuomo’s 36.3%, in a race that drew national attention. The son of renowned Indian-American filmmaker Mira Nair, Mamdani ran on a platform centered around affordable housing, expanded public transit, and policies to uplift working-class New Yorkers.

Backed by the Democratic Socialists of America and progressive heavyweights including Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Mamdani’s campaign marks a decisive leftward shift in New York’s Democratic politics. If elected in November, Mamdani would become the city’s first Muslim and Indian-origin mayor, a historic milestone that has energized progressive voters and activists.

However, Mamdani’s outspoken support for Palestinian rights and criticism of Israel have made him a polarizing figure, drawing sharp reactions from conservative voices and apprehension from centrist Democrats. Despite this, his campaign continues to resonate strongly with younger voters and urban progressives seeking transformative change.

While Trump’s vitriolic remarks reflect a broader conservative backlash, Mamdani’s victory signals growing momentum for the progressive wing of the Democratic Party—setting the stage for a contentious general election and possibly a major political realignment in the nation’s largest city.
