Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan, fielded by the ruling NDA, has been elected as the next Vice President of India, succeeding Jagdeep Dhankhar. The 68-year-old leader secured 452 first preference votes, defeating Opposition nominee and retired Supreme Court judge B. Sudershan Reddy, who garnered 300 votes.
According to Returning Officer PV Mody, a total of 754 votes were cast in the election, of which 15 were declared invalid. Out of the valid votes, Mr. Radhakrishnan clinched victory by a margin of 150 votes.
The margin, however, is among the lowest in the history of Vice-Presidential elections. In 2022, Jagdeep Dhankhar had recorded the highest victory margin in the last six elections, defeating Opposition candidate Margaret Alva by a landslide 528–182 tally.
With this win, CP Radhakrishnan is set to take over the constitutional post, becoming the country’s 15th Vice President.
