
DNA testing has officially confirmed the death of former Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani in the tragic Air India Flight AI171 crash in Ahmedabad on 12 June 2025. Forensic experts identified Rupani’s remains by matching them with DNA samples provided by his family. The confirmation came on Sunday after an intensive identification process.
The Boeing 787 Dreamliner, en route from Ahmedabad to London with 242 people onboard, crashed into a medical college hostel in Meghaninagar shortly after takeoff. The crash triggered a massive fireball, killing 241 individuals — including 169 Indians, 53 Britons, seven Portuguese nationals, and one Canadian. The sole survivor, Vishwash Kumar Ramesh (seat 11A), sustained only minor injuries.
Several medical students and local residents were among the victims of the catastrophic Air India Flight AI171 crash in Ahmedabad. Former Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani, aged 68, was among those who lost their lives while en route to London to visit his daughter.
Rupani’s remains were identified through DNA testing at a dedicated forensic facility in Ahmedabad. The process was described as painstaking, given the extent of damage caused by the crash and resulting fire.
His final rites will take place in his hometown of Rajkot, where preparations are currently underway. In a heartfelt tribute, the city observed a half-day shutdown on Sunday, with schools and businesses closed to honour the late leader.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who visited the crash site, said, “Vijaybhai’s leadership transformed Gujarat; his loss is profound.” Gujarat chief minister Bhupendra Patel also paid his respects, describing Rupani’s “vision and crisis leadership” as “unparalleled.”
Air India and the Tata Group have announced ₹1 crore compensation for each victim’s family, along with interim relief of ₹25 lakh. As of Sunday, 32 victims had been identified through DNA testing, and 14 bodies handed over to their families. The process continues around the clock.
A veteran BJP leader, Rupani served as Gujarat’s chief minister from 2016 to 2021. His passing has left a deep void in the political landscape of the state, with tributes pouring in from across the country.
