Donald Trump’s India Trip on the Cards This Year: Sergio Gor

Sergio Gor, US President Donald Trump’s nominee for Ambassador to India, suggested during his Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing that Trump could visit India later this year for the Quad Leaders Summit. India is slated to host the meeting, though the exact date has yet to be finalised. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had extended the invitation to Trump during his February visit to the US.

Gor highlighted the importance of the Quad partnership, which brings together India, the US, Japan, and Australia to ensure a peaceful and prosperous Indo-Pacific. “The President is fully committed to continual engagement with the Quad,” Gor said, adding that discussions for Trump’s potential trip are already underway.

Addressing India-US cooperation, Gor pointed to joint military exercises, noting that 500 Indian troops recently trained with American forces in Alaska. He acknowledged tensions over tariffs but stressed that the bilateral relationship is strong and built on decades of cooperation.

On India’s purchase of Russian oil, Gor reaffirmed Trump’s stance, urging alignment with global partners to ensure the effectiveness of US tariffs. He also described India as a “vital counterweight” to China in the Indo-Pacific and underlined India’s constructive role within BRICS, particularly in countering de-dollarisation trends.

Despite minor diplomatic hiccups, Gor said he would do everything possible, if confirmed, to enhance India-US ties.
