Ramban District Among Worst-Hit; Schools Closed Across Kashmir Valley Amid Severe Weather

At least five people have died in rain-related incidents across the Jammu region over the past two days, as relentless torrential rains triggered widespread landslides and flash floods. Ramban district has been particularly devastated, with multiple homes destroyed and the crucial Jammu-Srinagar highway (NH44) completely blocked.

In Ramban’s Bagna village, a massive landslide claimed three lives after several houses were swept away. Around 30 homes have been reported destroyed, vehicles submerged, and critical transport routes cut off due to the adverse weather. Rescue operations are currently underway, with joint teams from the police, SDRF, Army, local volunteers, and NGOs working around the clock.

Elsewhere, in the Reasi district’s Arnas area, a woman and another person were killed, and one more was injured after being struck by lightning.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had earlier issued a warning for heavy to very heavy rainfall across the Union Territory, triggered by a western disturbance over the Western Himalayas. However, IMD Director General M Mohapatra noted that while significant rainfall was recorded, it remains uncertain whether a cloudburst occurred due to the lack of advanced observation networks in the hilly regions.

In response to the worsening weather, Jammu and Kashmir’s Education Minister Sakina Itoo announced the closure of all schools in the Kashmir Valley for April 21. “This decision has been taken as a precautionary step to ensure the safety and well-being of all students,” she stated in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

The inclement weather has also disrupted life in several other regions, including Banihal, Khari, Batote, Dharamkund, Seri, and Chamba, with reports of blocked roads and damaged infrastructure.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and said he is closely monitoring the situation. “We are in touch with the local administration to ensure immediate rescue efforts. Later today, I will be reviewing restoration, relief, and repair plans,” read a statement from his office on X.

Union Minister of State Jitendra Singh also lauded the efforts of the Indian Army and the local administration. “Their timely assistance has played a crucial role in providing relief to the affected population,” he said.

As the region braces for continued bad weather, residents are urged to remain alert and follow official advisories to stay safe.
