Gunman Dead After Midtown Manhattan Shooting Injures NYPD Officer and Civilians
Published on

A lone gunman opened fire at a Midtown Manhattan high-rise on Monday evening, injuring an NYPD officer and at least two civilians before taking his own life, police said.

The shooting occurred around 6:30 p.m. at 345 Park Avenue, home to several prominent offices including Blackstone and the NFL’s headquarters. The suspect, who reportedly entered the building carrying a long gun and wearing dark sunglasses and a jacket, made his way to the 33rd floor, where he died by suicide, according to law enforcement sources.

New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed that the situation had been brought under control and that “the lone shooter has been neutralized.” The building was placed under lockdown, with occupants ordered to shelter in place as a precaution.

NYPD Officer Among the Victims

One of the victims is a Bronx-based NYPD officer, who was working off-duty as private security when he was shot in the back near the building’s lobby. Reports on his condition have varied:

  • CNN reported the officer is expected to survive.

  • Fox News sources said the officer succumbed to his injuries.

  • CBS stated that two NYPD officers were shot — one fatally and the other wounded.

The officer had reportedly been stationed just outside the building when the gunman began firing.

Civilian Casualties

At least two civilians were also shot during the rampage:

  • One was transported to Bellevue Hospital.

  • Another is reported to be in critical condition, according to CNN.

Authorities have yet to publicly identify the shooter or release a motive for the attack. Security footage captured the suspect approaching the building with a long rifle, suggesting premeditation.

The NYPD and other law enforcement agencies remain on the scene as the investigation continues.
