Heavy overnight showers on Tuesday disrupted daily life across Kolkata and its surrounding areas, submerging several neighborhoods under knee-deep water and bringing traffic to a standstill.

The torrential rain, which began past midnight, led to water entering numerous homes and residential complexes as roads were inundated.

The city is on alert for more rainfall, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned that a low-pressure area over the northeast Bay of Bengal could trigger heavy showers in multiple districts of south Bengal.

The southern and eastern parts of Kolkata were hit hardest. Garia Kamdahari recorded a staggering 332 mm of rainfall in just a few hours, followed by Jodhpur Park at 285 mm, Kalighat at 280 mm, Topsia at 275 mm, Ballygunge at 264 mm, and Thantania in north Kolkata at 195 mm, according to the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC).

Authorities have urged residents to exercise caution and avoid non-essential travel as the city grapples with the ongoing flooding.
