India Rises to 77th Rank in Henley Passport Index 2025, Gains Access to 59 Countries

India has made a notable improvement in global travel freedom, climbing eight places to secure the 77th spot in the Henley Passport Index 2025. Indian passport holders now enjoy visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 59 countries, up from 57 last year.

The jump in ranking comes despite the addition of only two new destinations, indicating a relative strengthening of the Indian passport compared to other nations. The Henley Passport Index ranks passports based on the number of destinations their holders can access without a prior visa.

This development is seen as a positive step for international mobility for Indian citizens, especially as global travel rebounds post-pandemic. Travel and diplomatic experts view the rise as a reflection of India’s growing global engagement and improving bilateral relations.

The Ministry of External Affairs has welcomed the improved ranking, stating that efforts are ongoing to negotiate visa relaxations with more countries to further enhance travel convenience for Indian citizens.
