Israeli diplomatic missions across the United States have increased security measures and lowered flags to half-staff in response to a deadly shooting outside the Israeli Embassy in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday night.
Elias Rodriguez, a 31-year-old man, has been charged with the murder of two embassy staff members in what authorities are investigating as a hate crime. According to law enforcement, Rodriguez shouted pro-Palestinian slogans, including “Free Palestine,” during his arrest and claimed he acted “for Gaza and Palestine.”
The attack occurred near a Jewish museum, intensifying concerns about antisemitic violence. Rodriguez, who was unarmed when apprehended, also referenced being inspired by an Air Force member who self-immolated outside the same embassy in February 2024, calling him a “martyr” and “courageous.”
The U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia has condemned the incident. “Violence against anyone based on their religion is an act of cowardice. It is not an act of a hero. Antisemitism will not be tolerated, especially in the nation’s capital," said Interim U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro.
Rodriguez currently faces charges related to the killing of foreign officials, with more charges expected as the investigation unfolds.
The incident comes amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, as Israel intensifies its military operations in Gaza.
