A 24-year-old law student has alleged that she was gang-raped inside South Calcutta Law College on the night of June 25, 2025. The main accused, Monojit Mishra (31), a former student and the general secretary of the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) for South Kolkata district, reportedly assaulted her after she rejected his marriage proposal.

In her detailed complaint, the survivor stated that Mishra had pressured her to marry him. When she refused, citing an existing relationship, Mishra allegedly threatened to harm her boyfriend and implicate her parents in false criminal cases. She was then confined within the college premises, taken to the security guard room, undressed, and raped by Mishra, while two current students—Zaib Ahmed (19) and Pramit Mukherjee (20)—stood by and watched.

The woman said she resisted and pleaded with the accused, even falling at Mishra’s feet, but her appeals were ignored. During the assault, she experienced a panic attack and difficulty breathing, but no help was provided. The accused allegedly filmed the act and later used the footage to threaten and silence her. She was eventually released, but only under further intimidation, and claimed she had also been forced to prove her "loyalty" to the TMCP beforehand.

The assault reportedly occurred between 7:30 pm and 10:50 pm, after the college’s main gate was locked on Mishra’s instructions. Following her complaint at Kasba Police Station, all three accused were arrested within hours and remanded to five days of police custody.

The case has drawn widespread outrage. The National Commission for Women has demanded a detailed report and full support for the survivor, including medical and psychological aid. Politically, the incident has intensified tensions, with the BJP criticising the ruling Trinamool Congress over the state of women’s safety. The TMC has condemned the incident and assured the public that strict legal action will follow.
