Mark Carney has been named the new leader of the Liberal Party and the 24th prime minister of Canada, as announced on Monday. The former head of the Bank of Canada is set to take over from Justin Trudeau in the highest office in Ottawa. Sachit Mehra, the president of the Liberal Party, confirmed Carney's success in the leadership contest. Carney, who was the leading candidate to replace Trudeau, previously held the position of the 8th governor of the Bank of Canada from 2008 to 2013 and served as the chair of the Financial Stability Board from 2011 to 2018.

The former executive of Goldman Sachs gained prominence for his role in assisting Canada in evading one of the most disastrous consequences of the 2008 financial crisis. According to polls, the citizens regard him as the most dependable politician to engage with US President Donald Trump. Carney had previously compared Trump to Voldemort, the villain from the Harry Potter series.

Mark Carney emerged victorious in the leadership contest, garnering 131,674 votes, which constitutes approximately 85.9 percent of the total ballots cast. His nearest competitors included Chrystia Freeland, who received 11,134 votes, Karina Gould, who obtained 4,785 votes, and Frank Baylis, who secured 4,038 votes. Prior to delivering his speech at the Liberal Party convention, Carney was introduced on stage by his daughter, Cleo Carney.
