The newly launched Kolkata–Sairang Express has witnessed a surge in bookings ahead of the Durga Puja holidays, underscoring its popularity among passengers traveling between West Bengal and Mizoram. Flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 13, the train began commercial operations today, September 18, and is set to play a key role in strengthening connectivity between the two states. With Durga Puja scheduled from September 28 to October 2, demand has significantly increased, and railway officials expect the service to run at full occupancy during the festive period.

The Kolkata–Sairang Express runs thrice a week—on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays. Its introduction is not only easing travel for residents of both regions but is also expected to boost tourism in the Northeast. Mizoram, with its scenic landscapes and unique cultural heritage, is likely to attract more visitors, particularly those from West Bengal who plan holiday trips during the festive season. Similarly, Kolkata continues to be a cultural hub and a popular destination for visitors from Mizoram, especially during Durga Puja.

Railway officials note that the timing of the train’s launch has aligned perfectly with the holiday rush, giving passengers a new and efficient travel option. Tourism stakeholders believe the increased footfall will benefit local economies, including transport operators, hotels, and small businesses in both cities. The Kolkata–Sairang Express represents a milestone in improving inter-state rail connectivity and is set to become a crucial link for trade, travel, and cultural exchange between West Bengal and Mizoram.
