Mughal dynasty excluded from Class 7 NCERT, adds new chapters on Indian rulers

The revised Class 7 NCERT has undergone some crucial changes, with the National Council of Educational Research excluding chapters on the Mughal Empire and Delhi Sultanate from its updated Class 7 Social Science textbook (Exploring Society: India and Beyond, Part Part-1). These chapters have been replaced with detailed content on ancient Indian dynasties such as the Magadha, Mauryas, Shungas, and Sātavāhanas.

The 2025 syllabus, aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, emphasizes "Indian ethos" through Sanskrit terms like janapada (settlements) and samrāj (supreme ruler), while also integrating modern references, such as the 2025 Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj. Although the Kumbh Mela witnessed massive tourism, it also saw a tragic stampede that claimed 30 lives, which was not referenced in the revised content.

Critics argue that the removal erases medieval India’s syncretic cultural legacy, particularly the Mughals’ architectural and administrative contributions. However, many counter that this shift corrects historical imbalances by spotlighting indigenous empires.
