Newly opened Patna flyover caves in after heavy rain, just two months post-inauguration

Just two months after its inauguration, a section of Patna’s much-hyped double-decker flyover has reportedly sunk following heavy rainfall on Sunday, raising concerns over construction quality. The ₹422 crore flyover, designed to ease traffic congestion on the ever-busy Ashok Rajpath, was inaugurated by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on June 11.

A video shared by ANI shows a large crater on the state capital’s first elevated corridor, alarming residents and commuters. The 2.2-kilometre structure stretches from Kargil Chowk at Gandhi Maidan to Science College via Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH).

Built by the Bihar State Bridge Construction Corporation Limited, the flyover was a key infrastructure project intended to transform the Ashok Rajpath corridor into a four-level system—comprising two elevated flyover levels, a ground-level service road, and an underground metro line in the future.

Patna has been receiving relentless rainfall over the past 24 hours, resulting in severe waterlogging across multiple neighbourhoods, including Kankarbagh, Rajendra Nagar, Exhibition Road, and Gandhi Maidan.

In response to the worsening weather, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an 'orange alert' for Patna and several other districts including Gaya, Jamui, Aurangabad, Khagaria, Banka, Vaishali, Samastipur, Sheikhpura, Lakhisarai, East and West Champaran, Arwal, and Nawada for the next 48 hours.

As per the latest district-wise rainfall bulletin, light to moderate rainfall has been recorded in areas such as Patna, Muzaffarpur, Bhagalpur, Begusarai, Nalanda, and several others since August 2.
