ChatGPT maker OpenAI is planning a large-scale data centre in India as part of its global infrastructure rollout, Bloomberg reported on Monday, citing sources. The proposed facility could have a capacity of at least 1 gigawatt, though details on location and timeline remain unclear.
Backed by Microsoft, OpenAI has registered a legal entity in India and begun hiring locally. In August, the company also announced its first office in New Delhi, reflecting India’s role as its second-largest user market.
The project is linked to Stargate, OpenAI’s global AI infrastructure push. CEO Sam Altman is expected to share more during his September visit to India. OpenAI and Microsoft declined to comment, while Reuters said it could not independently confirm the report.
Stargate was unveiled earlier this year by US President Donald Trump as part of a $500 billion private-sector initiative involving OpenAI, Oracle and SoftBank to expand AI infrastructure worldwide.
