PM Modi Attends G7 Summit in Kananaskis Amid Diplomatic Reset with Canada

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Kananaskis, Canada, on Tuesday to participate in the G7 Summit, marking his first visit to the country in a decade. The summit, taking place from June 16–17, is Modi’s sixth consecutive G7 appearance and is part of his ongoing three-nation tour, following a stop in Cyprus. His visit comes at the invitation of Canada’s newly elected Prime Minister, Mark Carney.

The G7 agenda is focused on global priorities such as energy security, emerging technologies, the AI-energy nexus, quantum innovation, and geopolitical stability. Modi is expected to engage with leaders of G7 nations, invited outreach partners, and heads of key international organizations to share India’s perspectives on these critical challenges.

On the sidelines of the summit, Modi will hold several bilateral meetings, including a high-profile discussion with Prime Minister Carney—a move widely seen as a step toward improving strained India-Canada ties. Relations between the two countries had reached a low point following Canada’s accusations surrounding the killing of pro-Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. However, diplomatic contacts have gradually resumed in recent months, with ongoing dialogue between security agencies and discussions around appointing new high commissioners.

The Ministry of External Affairs described India and Canada as “vibrant democracies” and expressed hope that the summit would offer a platform to explore fresh avenues for cooperation.

Modi’s visit also comes shortly after India’s Operation Sindoor, which targeted terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in response to the Pahalgam terror attacks—further elevating the geopolitical stakes of his presence at the summit.
