Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday delivered a strong yet indirect response to former U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent remarks branding India’s economy as “dead.” Speaking at a public rally in Varanasi, Modi emphasized that India is on track to become the world’s third-largest economy and must stay vigilant in safeguarding its interests amid global instability.

“India is set to become the third biggest economy in the world. That’s why we need to stay alert about our economic interests,” said Modi, without naming Trump.

Trump had recently announced a 25% tariff on Indian imports and criticized India’s trade with Russia, claiming that the Indian economy had “tanked” and relied heavily on American markets.

In a speech laced with nationalistic appeals, Modi underlined the need for economic self-reliance and urged citizens to embrace the “vocal for local” movement.

“We will buy only things made by Indians. Those who want India to rise — regardless of their political views — must resolve to support swadeshi products,” he said.

The Prime Minister also reiterated his government’s priority to uplift farmers, support small-scale industries, and generate employment for youth.

“Our farmers, small industries, and youth employment — these are our top concerns. The government is doing everything in the country's interest, but citizens also have responsibilities,” he added.

Calling on the business community to back domestic manufacturing, Modi said:

“The world is facing disruption. I appeal to my business brothers and sisters — let’s resolve to sell only swadeshi goods.”

Earlier in the day, Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation for infrastructure projects worth ₹2,200 crore in Varanasi. These include road upgrades, railway overbridges, and enhancements to rural and urban transport — part of his ongoing efforts to modernize the constituency he has represented since 2014.
