Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reached a major milestone in Indian political history. As of July 25, 2025, he has completed 4,078 consecutive days in office, surpassing the record held by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, who served 4,077 days from January 24, 1966, to March 24, 1977. Modi now stands as India’s second longest consecutively serving Prime Minister, behind only Jawaharlal Nehru.
Modi's political journey is marked by several unique distinctions. He is the first Prime Minister born after Independence, and the longest-serving non-Congress Prime Minister. He also holds the title of being the longest-serving PM from a non-Hindi-speaking state.
A historic record of electoral success bolsters his tenure. Modi is the first non-Congress leader to complete two full terms and return for a third with a clear majority—leading the BJP to emphatic Lok Sabha victories in 2014, 2019, and 2024. This achievement had last been accomplished by Indira Gandhi in the 1971 general election.
Notably, apart from Nehru, Modi is the only Indian Prime Minister to lead his party to three consecutive general election wins. Over his career, he has led the BJP to six back-to-back victories as its central face, three as Chief Minister of Gujarat (2002, 2007, 2012) and three as Prime Ministerial candidate (2014, 2019, 2024).
Hailing from Vadnagar, Gujarat, Modi’s journey—from selling tea at a railway station with his father to becoming the country’s top leader—is seen by many as a symbol of perseverance and grassroots connection. Before assuming national leadership, he served as Gujarat's Chief Minister for over a decade, where he was credited with development-focused governance.
On the global stage, Modi has emerged as a significant figure, enhancing India’s presence in world affairs and guiding the nation through a transformative era. With nearly 24 years of public office experience, his political legacy now stands among the most enduring in India’s democratic history.
