Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Manipur on September 13 to launch and inaugurate development projects worth ₹8,500 crore. This will be his first visit to the state since ethnic clashes between the Kuki and Meitei communities erupted in May 2023, claiming over 260 lives and displacing thousands.

Modi’s itinerary includes laying foundation stones for ₹7,300 crore projects at Peace Ground in Churachandpur, a Kuki-majority district, and inaugurating ₹1,200 crore infrastructure works from Imphal, the Meitei-dominated capital. He is also expected to meet displaced families and announce possible rehabilitation packages.

The visit is being viewed as a balancing act, with stops in both Churachandpur and Imphal symbolizing outreach to the Kuki-Zo and Meitei communities. Analysts see this as a gesture of neutrality, as the Centre attempts to address the humanitarian and political crisis without appearing partisan.

The Manipur conflict began as a protest against Meitei demands for Scheduled Tribe status and escalated into widespread violence rooted in grievances over land rights, representation, and cultural identity.
