Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday announced the launch of Mission Sudarshan Chakra, an ambitious multi-layered defence framework designed to protect India from enemy missile strikes, terrorism, and cyber threats. The system, he said, would integrate advanced surveillance, cyber protection, and physical safeguards to create a nationwide security blanket.
Speaking during his Independence Day address, the Prime Minister likened the new shield to Israel’s Iron Dome and the United States’ proposed Golden Dome. However, Mission Sudarshan Chakra is expected to go beyond missile defence, offering precision counterstrike capabilities and protection against digital warfare, including hacking and phishing attacks.
The name draws inspiration from Hindu mythology, where Lord Krishna used the Sudarshan Chakra to shield the Sun, enabling Arjuna to defeat Jayadrath in the Mahabharata. “By 2035, I want to expand, strengthen, and modernise this shield. Drawing inspiration from Lord Krishna, we have chosen the path of the Sudarshan Chakra... the entire system should be researched, developed, and manufactured in India,” Mr Modi said, underlining the initiative’s alignment with the government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) mission.
India already has a strong defence layer through the Integrated Air Command and Control System (IACCS), which successfully thwarted missile threats during Operation Sindoor. Mission Sudarshan Chakra, however, aims to be a far more comprehensive framework—merging land, air, space, and cyber defence.
Operational specifics have not yet been disclosed, but sources indicate the shield will involve collaboration between India’s premier defence research agencies, the armed forces, and private sector innovators.
“Every citizen must feel protected,” the Prime Minister stressed, signaling that Mission Sudarshan Chakra will be central to India’s long-term security and strategic independence.
