‘Political hypocrisy’: Congress hits back at BJP, demands PM’s stand on judiciary remarks
Published on

A major political storm broke out and still a talk of the town after BJP MP Nishikant Dubey levelled serious accusations against the Supreme Court and the Chief Justice of India, alleging that they had exceeded their authority and were “inciting religious wars” in the country. Dubey questioned the judiciary’s power to review laws enacted by Parliament, stating, “If the Supreme Court is going to make the laws, then Parliament might as well shut down.” He went a step further by blaming Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna for triggering civil unrest. His comments came during the Supreme Court’s ongoing examination of the Waqf (Amendment) Act, where constitutional concerns were raised and the Centre agreed not to implement certain provisions until further notice.

Opposition parties, including the Congress, TMC, AIMIM, CPI, and Samajwadi Party, slammed Dubey’s comments, labelling them a direct assault on the judiciary and the Constitution. They accused the BJP of systematically attempting to erode judicial independence and dismantle constitutional checks on executive power.

In fact, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh and others criticised the BJP’s effort to distance itself from Dubey’s remarks as mere “damage control”, pointing to a recurring pattern where party MPs attack key institutions, only for the party to later disown their statements. While BJP president JP Nadda formally rejected Dubey’s remarks as his personal views and reiterated the party’s respect for the judiciary, the opposition dismissed his response as hollow and demanded concrete disciplinary action against the MPs involved.
