Pope Francis Faces Kidney Function Issues Amidst Double Pneumonia: Vatican Provides Health Update
Published on

Pope Francis has exhibited an "initial, slight insufficiency" in his kidney function, as reported by the Vatican on Sunday. The Pope has been hospitalized since February 14 and is currently battling double pneumonia.

"The condition of the Holy Father remains critical; however, he has not encountered any additional respiratory crises since yesterday evening. He has received two units of concentrated red blood cells, which have had a positive impact, resulting in an increase in his hemoglobin levels. While thrombocytopenia remains stable, some blood tests indicate early, mild renal insufficiency, which is presently being managed. High-flow oxygen therapy continues to be administered via nasal cannulas. The Holy Father remains alert and well-oriented," the Vatican stated in its medical update regarding Pope Francis, noting the absence of further respiratory crises.

He was administered two units of concentrated red blood cells, resulting in positive effects and an increase in his hemoglobin levels. Thrombocytopenia remains stable; however, certain blood tests indicate the onset of mild renal insufficiency, which is presently being managed. High-flow oxygen therapy is ongoing via nasal cannulas. The Holy Father is alert and well-oriented. Given the complexity of the clinical situation and the time required for pharmacological treatments to yield results, the prognosis must be considered guarded.
