Just days after the death of Pope Francis, US President Donald Trump stirred controversy by sharing an AI-generated image of himself dressed in papal robes on social media. The image was also posted by the official White House handle, sparking a flood of reactions online.

While some users took the post in a light-hearted manner, many criticised it for being insensitive to the memory of Pope Francis and for mocking the Catholic Church. One user wrote, “This is an insult to the Church and to God Himself. Trump is the devil.” Another tweeted, “This is extremely narcissistic and disrespectful. Do Republicans really vote for someone like this?”

Does Donald Trump want to be the Pope?

In a recent interview, Trump jokingly remarked, “I’d like to be the next Pope.” Following this statement, the AI image of him dressed as the Pope went viral. The image shows him in full papal attire, including a cross near his neck, resembling the traditional clothing of the head of the Catholic Church.
