Addressing the 11th convocation of the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI) in Bareilly, President Droupadi Murmu called for a change in how society refers to animals, urging people to replace the commonly used Hindi word ‘pashu’ (animal) with ‘jeevan dhan’—a term that translates to “wealth of life.”

Highlighting the deep interconnection between humans and animals, President Murmu said, “Life without animals cannot be imagined.” She emphasized their historical importance as essential partners in agriculture and transportation before the rise of modern machinery. “Today, we have technology, but in the past, animals were the saadhan (means) and bal (strength) of the farmers,” she noted.

President Murmu underscored the cultural reverence for animals in Indian tradition, where all living beings are viewed with divinity. She emphasized that animals are not just functional beings, but valuable companions in human life and progress.

She also stressed the need for strong animal healthcare systems, especially vaccination, to prevent zoonotic diseases that can impact both animals and humans. Commending IVRI’s work under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), she lauded its role in advancing veterinary science and protecting public health.

Her remarks were warmly received by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Governor Anandiben Patel, who were present to welcome her in Bareilly. The event also showcased the government’s broader commitment to animal welfare and veterinary development.

Through her speech, President Murmu reinforced the message that animals deserve respect, care, and a language that honors their role as vital contributors to India’s cultural heritage and rural economy.
