Prime Minister Narendra Modi has hailed the passage of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill and Mussalman Wakf (Repeal) Bill by Parliament as a "watershed moment" for the country's pursuit of socio-economic justice, transparency, and inclusive growth. Speaking during his visit to Thailand and Sri Lanka, the Prime Minister emphasized that the new legislation will particularly benefit marginalized communities, granting them a voice and opportunity long denied to them.
"The passage of these bills marks a significant step toward empowering those who have remained on the margins of society," Modi stated, highlighting the legislation's potential to bring about positive change. He also expressed gratitude to members of Parliament who contributed to the legislative process, acknowledging their efforts in strengthening the bills. "A special thanks also goes to the countless individuals who provided valuable inputs to the Parliamentary committee. This again reinforces the importance of debate and dialogue in shaping our laws," he added.
The Prime Minister further underscored the transformative nature of the Waqf system reforms, which have long been criticized for their lack of transparency and accountability. He pointed out that these deficiencies have particularly harmed the interests of Muslim women, the poor, and Pasmanda Muslims. "For decades, the Waqf system was synonymous with a lack of transparency and accountability, and this often resulted in injustice to vulnerable communities. The new legislation will enhance transparency, safeguard rights, and create a more modern, sensitive framework that prioritizes social justice," Modi said in a post on X.
The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, which faced strong opposition and protests from some Muslim organizations, passed both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha earlier this week. It is now awaiting the approval of President Droupadi Murmu to become an official Act.
While the government has insisted that the reforms will lead to greater efficiency in Waqf body operations and improve transparency, opposition parties have criticized the legislation, accusing the government of undermining minority rights and seeking control over Waqf properties.
Despite the opposition, the Prime Minister emphasized the broader vision for a more inclusive India, stating, "Our commitment is to ensure the dignity of every citizen, and this is how we build a stronger, more inclusive, and compassionate India."
