In light of increasing tensions with Pakistan following a deadly terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh emphasized his responsibility to safeguard India's borders and provide a strong response to any threats.
Speaking at an event in Delhi, Singh stated that it is his duty to collaborate with the armed forces to protect the nation and deliver a "befitting reply" to those who attempt to harm India's security. He stressed the importance of standing firm in the face of aggression, particularly in response to the recent attack that claimed the lives of 26 tourists.
Singh reassured the public that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, the government is fully committed to addressing the concerns voiced by citizens. "What you desire will certainly happen," he said, alluding to the growing calls for decisive action against Pakistan in light of the attack, which Indian authorities claim involved terrorists with cross-border linkages.
"As the defence minister, my responsibility is to work closely with my soldiers to ensure the protection of our borders and to provide a fitting response to anyone who casts an evil eye on our country," Singh remarked. He also noted that the people of India are well aware of Prime Minister Modi's leadership style, his resolve, and his ability to take bold actions.
India's response to Pakistan's continued aggression has included measures such as banning Pakistani visas and suspending the Indus Waters Treaty. The Indian military has also been actively responding to frequent ceasefire violations by Pakistani forces along the Line of Control (LoC), demonstrating its readiness to defend the nation’s sovereignty.
The tensions between the two nations are not new. In February 2019, India carried out an airstrike on a terrorist camp in Balakot, Pakistan, following a devastating suicide bombing in Pulwama that killed 40 Indian soldiers. In 2016, India also executed a surgical strike against terrorist targets in Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK) in retaliation for an attack on an Indian Army camp in Uri that claimed 19 Indian lives.
The Defence Minister's statement underscores the government's unwavering commitment to national security and the resolve to take all necessary measures to protect the country from external threats.
