Police in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ganderbal district on Friday arrested two people for allegedly selling rotten meat and expired food items.

The arrests came as part of a wider crackdown after authorities seized more than 5,000 kg of rotten meat across Kashmir in recent weeks.

According to police, one of the accused, Abdul Hameed Lone of Kondabal Safapora, was caught with a large stock of frozen kebabs and meatballs in unhygienic and decayed condition, unfit for human consumption. In a separate case, the owner of Hotel Matamal Food Sale Point in Beehama was found using expired edible items in cooking. Both accused were arrested, and FIRs have been registered.

Similar checks were conducted in Budgam district, where two restaurants — New Arabian Nights and Shahi Darbar — were booked for selling rotten meat and maintaining unhygienic kitchens. Food safety officers imposed fines on several other food businesses for violations.

Police said investigations are underway and further inspections will continue to ensure consumer safety.
