Sri Lanka Releases 14 Indian Fishermen Following Modi’s Call for Humane Approach

Sri Lanka released 14 Indian fishermen on Sunday as a special gesture, a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged for a “humane approach” in resolving the long-standing issue. The fishermen's release came after discussions between Prime Minister Modi and Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake on Saturday, where the issue of Indian fishermen in Sri Lankan custody was a major topic.

The fishermen issue has been a contentious point in India-Sri Lanka relations, with frequent incidents in the past where Sri Lankan Navy personnel allegedly used force against Indian fishermen in the Palk Strait, a narrow waterway that separates Tamil Nadu from Sri Lanka.

Following the meeting, Modi emphasized the need for a "humane approach" to resolve the matter. "We also discussed issues related to fishermen’s livelihood. We agreed that we should proceed with a humane approach in this matter," Modi said in his media statement. He further highlighted the urgency of the situation, stressing the importance of the immediate release of fishermen and their boats.

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri also addressed the matter in a media briefing, stating that the issue was discussed "in considerable detail" during the talks. Misri explained that both sides agreed on the importance of adopting a humanitarian and constructive approach, as the issue directly impacts the livelihood of fishermen on both sides of the Palk Bay.

Additionally, both India and Sri Lanka are in talks to convene the next round of fishermen’s association discussions to address the ongoing challenges. Prime Minister Modi concluded his three-day visit to Sri Lanka on Sunday, marking the beginning of a more cooperative approach to resolving the fishermen dispute.
