Supreme Court Rejects Justice Yashwant Varma’s Plea Against Impeachment Panel Over Cash-at-Home Scandal

The Supreme Court has dismissed Justice Yashwant Varma’s challenge to an in-house committee’s recommendation for his impeachment, following the discovery of burnt piles of cash at his Delhi residence in March.

In its Thursday morning ruling, the court upheld the recommendation delivered by then-Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna, affirming that both the decision and the three-judge panel that made it were constitutionally valid. The bench said Justice Varma’s petition was “not worth entertaining” and criticised his conduct as “not confidence-inspiring.”

With this order, the path is now clear for the impeachment process that began last month. Over 145 Members of Parliament, spanning both opposition and government benches, had earlier submitted a notice to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla seeking an investigation into the high-profile “cash-at-home” controversy surrounding Justice Varma.
