Tahawwur Rana, a key co-conspirator in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, is set to arrive in India today. This follows a multi-agency operation in which an Indian team departed from the United States on a special flight Wednesday to bring him back. Rana is expected to land at 12 noon and will likely be held at Tihar Jail in Delhi.
Foreign Affairs expert Robinder Sachdev hailed the extradition of Rana as a significant step towards justice for the victims of the tragic Mumbai attacks and a testament to the strong cooperation between India and the United States. The extradition comes after the US Supreme Court dismissed Rana’s review petition seeking an emergency stay on his extradition.
Officials have confirmed that high-security cells in both Tihar Jail and Arthur Road prison in Mumbai are ready to accommodate Rana, given his high-risk status. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has also secured a court order transferring his case from Mumbai to Delhi.
Once in India, Rana is expected to face trial in connection with his involvement in the deadly 26/11 attacks, and the NIA may seek his custodial interrogation to aid in the ongoing investigation.
