In a shocking incident late Monday night, a Special Sub-Inspector (SSI) of police, Shanmugavel, was brutally hacked to death while attempting to intervene in a domestic dispute at a private estate in Kudimangalam near Udumalpet, located in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruppur district.
The tragic incident unfolded when SSI Shanmugavel, who was on night patrol duty, responded to an emergency call about a violent altercation involving a father and his two sons, allegedly intoxicated. The estate, where the clash occurred, is owned by a local AIADMK MLA.
According to police sources and eyewitnesses, the dispute involved a man named Murthy and his sons, Thangapandian and Manikandan. The officer reportedly reached the scene to find the sons assaulting their father. While attempting to de-escalate the situation and arrange medical help for the injured man, SSI Shanmugavel was suddenly attacked.
Manikandan, the younger son, who had been hiding nearby, allegedly emerged and struck the officer with a sickle. Moments later, Murthy and Thangapandian are said to have joined the assault, chasing the officer down and fatally hacking him. Shanmugavel’s driver managed to flee and alert nearby police units.
The three accused fled the scene immediately after the attack and are currently absconding. In response, authorities have formed five special police teams to track down and arrest the suspects.
The incident has sent shockwaves across the region and raised serious concerns about the safety of police personnel responding to volatile domestic violence cases. Senior officials have condemned the attack and assured that those responsible will be brought to justice swiftly.
