Tripura joins elite club of fully literate states, beats 95% mark

Tripura has reached a major educational milestone, becoming the third Indian state—after Mizoram and Goa—to be declared fully literate, crossing the 95% literacy benchmark set by the Ministry of Education. With a current literacy rate of 95.6%, the achievement has been officially confirmed by Preeti Meena, Director (Adult Education) at the Union Ministry of Education. This meets the UNESCO-defined threshold for full literacy.

The state's journey to this landmark has been one of steady progress. As per the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) for 2023–24, Tripura's literacy rate was 93.7%. At the time, around 23,000 individuals remained non-literate. Through the focused implementation of the ‘ULLAS – New India Literacy Programme’, aimed at adult education and lifelong learning, the state managed to bridge this gap and elevate its literacy rate beyond 95%. The initiative ensured inclusive access to basic education, particularly for marginalized communities.

Chief Minister Manik Saha highlighted the dramatic progress over the decades—from a mere 20.24% literacy rate in 1961 to 73.66% in 2001, and 87.22% in the 2011 Census. The latest figures reflect not just governmental commitment, but the collective determination of educators and citizens alike.

Beyond education, Tripura also ranks second among northeastern states in per capita income and GDP. This parallel rise in literacy and economic performance makes Tripura a strong example of balanced, inclusive development for other regions to follow.
