Trump Announces 35% Tariff on Canadian Imports, Warns of Wider Global Trade Tariffs
Published on

Former U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday declared that the United States will impose a 35% tariff on imports from Canada, effective August 1, marking a major escalation in his trade agenda. The announcement was made through a letter addressed to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, shared on Trump's social media platform.

Trump warned that the tariff rate could increase further if Canada retaliates. He also revealed plans to implement blanket tariffs of 15% to 20% on imports from most other U.S. trade partners.

In a separate interview with NBC News published the same day, Trump indicated that several countries have yet to receive official notification, but they too could soon be subject to similar trade measures. The former president has recently expanded his trade offensive to include new tariffs on close U.S. allies such as Japan and South Korea, and introduced a 50% tariff on copper imports.

Trump's aggressive trade stance signals a potential shift in global economic relations, particularly if these new tariffs trigger countermeasures from affected nations.
