A local court on Friday sentenced a 50-year-old man to death for the brutal murder of six members of a family in Juthada village, Pendurthi mandal, in 2021.

The convict, Battina Appalaraju, was found guilty of hacking the victims to death on April 15, 2021, over a long-running land dispute. The deceased included Bommidi Ramana (63), Usharani (35), Alluri Ramadevi (53), Nakkella Aruna (37), a six-month-old baby, and a two-year-old child.

After committing the crime, Appalaraju surrendered at the local police station.

Describing the murders as an act of “extreme brutality,” the court observed that six innocent lives, including two young children, were taken in cold blood.

In addition to the death penalty, Appalaraju was sentenced to up to seven years of rigorous imprisonment under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code and fined.
