What happened on April 22, 2025, is likely to go down as one of the biggest brutal tragedy in Indian history, as a terrifying terrorist attack shook the entire nation. The incident occurred at Baisaran Meadow near Pahalgam in the Anantnag district of Kashmir, where more than 25 tourists were killed on the spot by terrorists. Now, Pakistan-based terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba’s offshoot, The Resistance Front (TRF), is suspected to have played a role in Tuesday’s terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. In response, Northern Command Commander Lt. Gen. MV Suchindra Kumar is heading to Srinagar from Udhampur.
TRF was formed after the abrogation of Article 370 and initially operated as an online unit. Within six months, it evolved into a physical group by integrating militants from various factions, including LeT. Interestingly, many are connecting this terrorist outfit with Pakistan and view it as a strategic move by Pakistan to address concerns related to terror financing, especially during the period when it faced pressure from the Financial Action Task Force (FATF). It is believed that Pakistan’s intelligence agency, ISI, was behind the creation of TRF, aiming to shift international focus away from LeT. Outfit was founded by Kashmiri terrorist Sheikh Sajjad Gul, also known as Sheikh Sajjad. His name surfaced in the June 14, 2018, killing of senior journalist Shujaat Bukhari and his two personal security officers in Srinagar.
The Resistance Front has been linked to several deadly attacks in Jammu and Kashmir since its emergence. In April 2020, it was first named during a four-day gunbattle in the Keran sector near the LoC, where five infiltrators and five Indian soldiers were killed. On 30 October 2020, TRF terrorists shot dead three BJP workers in Kulgam, quickly claiming responsibility. A month later, on 26 November, they filmed an attack on 2 Rashtriya Rifles personnel in Lawaypora, Srinagar, capturing close-range shooting and weapon snatching. The outfit has also been linked to several other deadly attacks.
