DIGIPIN (Digital Postal Index Number) is an innovative digital addressing system launched by the Department of Posts, now gaining significant attention. Developed in collaboration with IIT Hyderabad and ISRO’s National Remote Sensing Centre, DIGIPIN redefines location accuracy in India. Unlike traditional six-digit PIN codes that cover broad geographic regions, DIGIPIN assigns a unique 10-character alphanumeric code to every 4m x 4m grid across the country. This system uses precise latitude and longitude coordinates to generate each code, allowing for exact identification of locations—whether it's a house, business, or even a remote, unstructured area.
DIGIPIN offers numerous benefits that are set to transform how addresses are identified and managed across India. Each code corresponds to a precise 4x4 meter square, removing ambiguity caused by unstructured or duplicate addresses. This high precision enhances last-mile delivery for e-commerce, courier, and logistics services, ensuring packages reach the exact destination. It also enables quicker emergency response, allowing police, ambulances, and fire services to locate individuals even in areas lacking formal addresses. DIGIPIN promotes inclusivity by supporting address identification in rural, remote, or informal settlements where conventional addresses are unreliable or absent. Privacy is maintained, as each code is generated solely from geospatial coordinates without storing personal data. Additionally, DIGIPIN supports offline use, making it practical in low-connectivity regions. To get your DIGIPIN, visit the official “Know Your DIGIPIN” portal and use a GNSS-enabled device, such as a smartphone, to pinpoint your location and generate your unique code.
To obtain your DIGIPIN, visit the official ‘Know Your DIGIPIN’ portal. Using a GNSS-enabled device (like a smartphone), simply select your current location to generate a 10-character code for that exact spot. The Department of Posts also plans to launch a dedicated app for greater convenience.
Importantly, DIGIPIN does not replace the traditional PIN code. Instead, it serves as a complementary digital layer, enhancing the accuracy and functionality of address-based services. As India advances toward a digitally driven infrastructure, DIGIPIN is set to become a cornerstone for smart governance and efficient service delivery.
