Woman's Claim of Train Sexual Assault Found False After GRP Probe; Case to Be Closed

Published on

A 30-year-old woman's allegation of being sexually assaulted aboard a moving train has been found to be fabricated, following a detailed investigation by the Government Railway Police (GRP). Authorities are now initiating the process to close the case.

The incident came to light on July 13 when Dadar GRP received an alert from a public hospital in Mumbai regarding a woman admitted with injuries to her private parts. When questioned, the woman claimed she had travelled from Prayagraj to Mumbai on the Gorakhpur Express and was assaulted by an unknown man while using the washroom in the general coach.

Initially, she expressed reluctance to file a formal complaint, citing fear of social stigma. Despite efforts by police and NGO counsellors to convince her, she remained unwilling. However, due to the serious nature of the allegation, the police registered a suo motu FIR.

Investigating officers scanned CCTV footage across various stations, retraced the woman’s alleged travel route, and cross-verified her statements. The inquiry eventually uncovered that she had actually travelled to Mumbai with her boyfriend, and the two had checked into a guest house on July 12. The injuries, police said, occurred during consensual intimacy, after which she was hospitalised.

Authorities stated that the woman admitted to concealing the truth to protect her boyfriend's identity. She has since returned to her hometown. Based on the findings, the GRP has concluded that the complaint was false and is moving to close the case.
